What do we know about the background to our hero? The characters were created by George W Trendle and developed by Fran Striker, for radio and television.
The television series which was aired from 1949 until 1957 always started with the music from the William Tell Overture playing as the theme tune. It ended the same way each week, with Clayton Moore (The Lone Ranger) rearing up on Silver’s back and saying “Hi Ho Silver, away” with somebody asking the question “Who was that masked man anyway?”
There were two hundred and twenty one episodes made, staring Clayton Moore in all but one season, when the Lone Ranger was played by actor John Hart. The series were in black and white until the final one when color had arrived on the television screen.
The fictional background given to the character was that he has his birthday in 1850, giving him the name of John Reid. He was a Texas Ranger and was part of group who were ambushed in a canyon named Bryants Gap by the Cavendish gang.
One of the gang had infiltrated into the Texas Rangers, but he was also among the dead. Daniel Reid, who was John’s brother was killed along with every man in the group, all except John Reid.
John Reid had a childhood friend, a Native American called Tonto, and Tonto rides by and finds the massacre. He Buries the men, adding an extra grave for John Reid, but secretly nurses him back to health.
In some of the history, it has Tonto saying to John Reid after he saved him, “You, lone Ranger now” hence the name John took to preserve his identity. The mask The Lone Ranger made, came from the vest belonging to his dead brother, he swore he would fight against injustice and crime, as he rode the range in the American old west.

The radio programme, The Lone Ranger influenced American culture back in the early nineteen thirties when it was first on the air. More than a generation of boys wanted to wear kids cowboy costumes and a Lone Ranger hat, while they galloped across their back yard shouting “Hi Ho Silver”.
The Lone Ranger then arrived on screen and the boys who grew up listening to the radio show, now had boys of their own who were still wanting to wear a cowboy costume and play “pretend” with their friends.

Jack Carlton Moore was born in Chicago and was working aged eight years old as part of a trapeze act. In his early years he moved to Hollywood, working as a model and later as a stunt man.
Edward Small who was a Hollywood producer suggested he use the name Clayton Moore and it was during the movie “Ghost of Zorro” where he had a bit part, that George Trendle spotted him. Fran Striker was the writer behind the The Lone Ranger radio shows and they were getting ready to shoot a television series. Clayton Moore got the role which was to dominate the rest of his life.

Clayton Moore even managing to reduce the tone of his voice, to sound like the radio actor’s version of The Lone Ranger. The Lone Ranger was soon the highest rated show on the ABC network and earning them an Emmy nomination in 1950.
Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels stared in two full length films after the series ended. Following on from the second movie “The Lone Ranger and the Lost City of Gold” Clayton Moore entered into the second phase of his relationship with his alter-ego.

He was to spend the best part of the following forty years making guest appearances and classic commercials as the masked man. Occasionally he would be joined by his trusted companion Jay Silverheels, who Moore expressed his love and respect for throughout his career.
Jack Wrather who was the owner of the name “the Lone Ranger” obtained a court order to prevent Moore, who was 65 at this point, from dressing up and making appearances as the masked man. Wrather was making a new movie and didn’tt want the public to think the star of his film was an old man!
This turned out to be somewhat of a P.R. disaster, as Moore responded by changing the costume slightly and instead of his famous mask, using a pair of Foster Grant wrap round glasses, plus counter suing Jack Wrather, and winning.
In 2006 Moore became the only star indited into the Hollywood Walk of Fame to actually have his character name along side his own. Other attributes he received were from the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum and the Stuntman’s Hall of fame.
He was also associated with the baseball team Texas Rangers and was often quoted as saying that he fell in love with the character of The Lone Ranger and strove to follow his creed throughout his own life. Step into a Texas Ranger outfit and save the world!
